According to top-mba-universities, Charlotte County, Virginia is located in South Central Virginia and is part of the Piedmont region. The county was formed in 1764 from Lunenburg County and was named for Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III. The county seat is Charlotte Court House and it has a population of 12,715 as of 2019. The area that would become Charlotte County was originally home to several Native American tribes including the Monacan, Tutelo, Saponi, and Appomattox. During the colonial period, the county was largely used for farming and for trading with nearby towns. In 1777, a court house was built in Charlotte Court House which served as the county’s center of government until 1810 when it moved to Keysville. The Civil War had a significant impact on Charlotte County. After Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, Confederate troops moved into the area to protect Richmond and Petersburg from Union forces. On June 26th 1864, Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee defeated Union forces at Staunton River Bridge State Park near Randolph (present-day Boydton). This battle marked one of Lee’s last victories before he surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865. After the war ended, many former slaves migrated to Charlotte County where they established churches and businesses while working as sharecroppers on local farms or as laborers in local industries such as tobacco production or lumbering. In 1895 a branch of what would become Virginia State University opened in Keysville which offered higher education opportunities to African Americans who were unable to attend other universities due to segregation laws at the time. Today, Charlotte County continues to be rural with many residents employed by local poultry farms or small businesses such as sawmills or tobacco farms while others commute to nearby cities for employment opportunities or educational opportunities at nearby colleges such as Longwood University or Hampden-Sydney College. Despite its rural location there are still plenty of recreational activities available including fishing on one of many area lakes or golfing at several local courses. Charlotte County Public Schools is the primary school district serving the area. It is composed of five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The elementary schools are Keysville Elementary School, Randolph-Henry Elementary School, Central Elementary School, Phenix Elementary School, and Red Oak Elementary School. The middle school is Randolph-Henry Middle School and the high school is Randolph-Henry High School. The district focuses on providing a safe learning environment for all students while also providing rigorous academic programs to ensure that students have the necessary skills to reach their goals after graduation. The district offers a variety of extracurricular activities such as athletics and clubs which allow students to explore new interests while developing important leadership skills and friendships. The district strives to provide its students with an education that will prepare them for college or career by offering dual enrollment courses in partnership with local colleges as well as Advanced Placement (AP) courses in a variety of subjects. In addition, Charlotte County Public Schools offers a variety of career and technical education programs which enable students to gain real world experience in various fields such as automotive technology or health sciences.
