The majority of the population is mestizo, which is a mix of indigenous and European descent. About 20% of the population is indigenous, mainly made up of Lenca, Miskito, and Garifuna peoples. The rest are mostly of European descent or Afro-Caribbean descent. The official language spoken in Honduras is Spanish, but many other languages are also spoken by different communities throughout the country. The literacy rate in Honduras is 85% for people aged 15 and over, with 95% for men and 75% for women. In terms of religion, most Hondurans identify as Roman Catholic (90%), followed by Protestants (7%). There are also small populations who practice other religions such as Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism. In terms of education level attainment, around half the population has completed secondary school or higher levels of education. Poverty remains an issue in Honduras; around 60% of the population lives below the poverty line.
