Business

In the woods of Maine, the forest industries, especially pulp and paper production, play a dominant role. There is also the leather, plastic and food industry. The shipbuilding industry and port operations in Portland are also of central importance to the business community. Despite some decline, fishing, especially lobster fishing, is still of economic importance.

Agriculture produces dairy products, potatoes and poultry products. The state is also the United States' largest supplier of blueberries and a popular recreation area. During the 2000s, tourism has become an increasingly important source of income.

Tourism and gastronomy

Although the state lacks large and well-known tourist destinations, tourism plays an important economic role. Maine has a varied landscape with a large number of small lakes and streams, as well as many islands and fine sandy beaches along the Atlantic coast. Acadia National Park has millions of visitors annually.

The geographical location with cold and long winters has characterized the food attitude in Maine. So the long-cooked became legion, and even today, New England stew is a concept and an everyday dish. From the indigenous population, the newcomers learned how to make use of corn, turkey, beans, maple syrup, pumpkin and a large abundance of seafood. Traditional dishes in Maine today are clam bakes (including chicken, corn, potatoes, lobster and mussels), boiled lobster with lemon and melted butter, hot potato salad with egg-based dressing, blueberry pie and chocolate brownies.

History

The first permanent European settlements were founded in the 1620s. In 1677, the entire area was purchased by the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Maine later became a district within Massachusetts. In connection with the so-called Missouri Compromise 1820, Maine became its own state. Agriculture, fishing and shipbuilding as well as the timber and paper industries were important industries early on, and in the 19th century the textile industry was added. During the 20th century, Maine often had financial problems. Politically, Republicans have dominated from the Civil War until the mid-1950s, but then they and Democrats have been strong.
