According to top-mba-universities, Klickitat County, Washington is a county located in the south-central part of the state. It is bordered by Yakima County to the east, Skamania and Cowlitz Counties to the west, and Klickitat County to the south. The county was created in 1859 as part of Oregon Territory and was named after the Klickitat people who had lived in the area for centuries prior to Euro-American settlement. The first settlers in Klickitat County were miners and farmers who began arriving in the late 1860s. Gold rush towns such as Dallesport, Goldendale, and Bickleton sprung up around this time and quickly grew into thriving communities. In 1883, Klickitat became an official county with its own government and courthouse. The early years of Klickitat County were marked by growth and prosperity as more people arrived to settle in its towns. The railroad came through in 1893 which allowed for increased commerce between these small towns and larger cities such as Portland or Seattle. This period of growth continued until World War II when many young men left to serve their country overseas. Klickitat County’s economy shifted after the war as many returning veterans found work in local industries such as timber harvesting or fruit farming. These industries provided steady employment for many years until they began to decline due to changing economic conditions during the 1970s and 80s. Today, Klickitat County is a rural community with a population of just over 20,000 people which has remained relatively unchanged over the past few decades. Despite its small size, it still provides recreational opportunities such as fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, whitewater rafting, skiing and snowmobiling that attract visitors from all over Washington state each year. It also boasts some of Washington’s most beautiful scenery along its winding rivers and mountain ranges that make it an ideal spot for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a quiet getaway away from it all. Klickitat County is served by two public school districts, the White Salmon Valley School District and the Klickitat School District. The White Salmon Valley School District serves the communities of Bingen, White Salmon, and Husum, while the Klickitat School District serves all other areas in the county. Both districts offer a variety of educational opportunities for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The White Salmon Valley School District consists of three schools: Columbia High School, Henkle Middle School, and Whitson Elementary School. Columbia High is a comprehensive four-year high school that offers a range of courses including math, science, language arts, social studies, foreign languages, health/physical education and electives such as music and art. Henkle Middle provides middle school instruction to students in grades 6-8 while Whitson Elementary serves students in kindergarten through 5th grade. All three schools also provide support services such as special education and gifted programs. The Klickitat School District consists of five schools: Goldendale High School, Goldendale Middle/Elementary Schools (grades K-8), Lyle Elementary (grades K-5), Trout Lake Elementary (grades K-5), and Bickleton High/Middle/Elementary Schools (grades K-12). Goldendale High offers advanced courses in math, science and English as well as electives such as music and art. Goldendale Middle/Elementary provides instruction for grades 6th through 8th while Lyle Elementary focuses on instruction for kindergarten through 5th grade students. Trout Lake Elementary also offers instruction for kindergarten through 5th grade students while Bickleton High/Middle/Elementary serves students from kindergarten to 12th grades with classes ranging from core subjects to electives such as music or art classes. Klickitat County is committed to providing quality education for all its students regardless of location or background. To this end both school districts offer a variety of extracurricular activities including sports teams such as football or basketball; clubs such as student government or drama; afterschool programs; various community activities; field trips; technology classes; mentoring programs; summer camps; and more. With these options available to them Klickitat County’s young people are sure to have an enriching educational experience that will prepare them for success in college or career endeavors after graduation.
