It is home to both Arab and non-Arab citizens, with a majority being Saudi Arabian nationals. The population has grown rapidly in recent years, due in part to high immigration and natural population growth. As of 2019, Saudi Arabia was ranked as the 28th most populous country in the world. The majority of Saudi Arabian nationals are Arab, with a small minority of other ethnicities including South Asians and African Americans. The population is predominantly Sunni Muslim but there are also Shia Muslims and other religious groups such as Christians and Jews present in the country. The official language is Arabic but English is widely spoken by many expatriates living in Saudi Arabia. Education is compulsory for all citizens aged 6-15 and free for all up to university level. The literacy rate is 92% overall, much higher than the global average of 84%. In terms of gender demographics, there are slightly more males than females with a ratio of 1:1.04 respectively.
