The population is predominantly Sunni Muslim but there are also Shia Muslims and other religious groups such as Christians and Jews present in the country. The official language is Arabic but English is widely spoken by many expatriates living in Saudi Arabia. Education is compulsory for all citizens aged 6-15 and free for all up to university level. The literacy rate is 92% overall, much higher than the global average of 84%. In terms of gender demographics, there are slightly more males than females with a ratio of 1:1.04 respectively.
