National anthem

Based on flag descriptions by Countryaah.com, the national anthem of a country is a piece of music that is usually underlaid with a text and is intended to express the state, lifestyle and national feeling of a country. It is played on particularly festive occasions, for example on state visits, on special holidays or to honor politicians, business leaders, etc. The national anthem of the respective winning country is also performed at the award ceremony on the occasion of international sporting events such as the Olympic Games, the Tour de France or World and European Championships. The introduction of the national anthems in most European countries goes back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The numerous former colonies that had become independent usually carried their national anthems, as well as their national flags.

Antigua and Barbuda flag and coat of arms

The national anthem of Antigua and Barbuda is "Fair Antigua, we salute thee!" It was written by the novelist Hamilton Richards and composed by Walter Garnet Picart. It became the local anthem after independence in 1967. Britain's anthem "God save the Queen" remained the official anthem.

It is::

Fair Antigua, we salute thee!

Proudly we this anthem raise

To thy glory and thy beauty,

Joyfully we sing the praise

Of the virtues, all bestowed

On thy sons and daughters free;

Ever striving, ever seeking,

Dwell in love and unity.

Raise the standard! Raise it boldly!

Answer now to duty's call

To the service of thy country,

Sparing nothing, giving all;

Gird your loins and join the battle

'Gainst fear, hate and poverty,

Each endeavoring, all achieving,

Live in peace where man is free.

God of nations, let Thy blessings

Fall upon this land of ours;

Rain and sunshine ever sending,

Fill her fields with crops and flowers;

We her children do implore Thee,

Give us strength, faith, loyalty,

Never failing, all enduring

To defend her liberty.

And in the English translation:

First verse

Noble Antigua, we greet you!

We proudly sing this hymn

to your glory and because of your beauty,

We joyfully sing the praises of

all the virtues that you have given your free

sons and daughters;

Always trying, always looking.
